The idea of a Metaverse has been around since the 1980s, encapsulated in science fiction and notably popularised by the 1992 novel 'Snow Crash' by Neal Stephenson.
It's relevance today, however, comes from the rapid evolution of technology making this concept increasingly feasible.

Facebook (Meta): Facebook has rebranded itself as Meta, underlining its new strategic direction towards building the Metaverse. Facebook's Horizon Workrooms, a virtual reality remote work app, allows colleagues to collaborate as avatars in a virtual space.
Microsoft: Microsoft's Mesh for Teams enables users to have collaborative meetings in mixed reality. Its acquisition of AltspaceVR, a social VR platform, signals its commitment to the Metaverse.
Google: Google's Tilt Brush allows users to paint in 3D space with virtual reality.

⚖️ Opportunities and Challenges

The Metaverse presents an array of opportunities and challenges;

Opportunities: From an economic perspective, it could create new markets and jobs. In terms of education, it offers a chance for more immersive and engaging learning experiences.
Challenges: There are threats related to data privacy and security. Also, the risk of creating a digital divide between those who can afford to participate in the Metaverse and those who cannot.
